The program
What exactly is Squad Institute?
A marketplace of startups for work experience — for grads, post-grads, and career switchers. You claim a seat on a startup squad, get a buddy and a soft hold, and run a Sprint that ships real work and a recruiter-facing engagement graph. An optional year-long path deepens employment chase or Venture/ownership. It’s not a course, and it’s not fake busywork.
What about career coaching if I’m out of a job?
Same brain, softer door. Career coaching is for people between jobs — survival mode, search burnout, rent or visa pressure — who need one controllable next move before (or instead of) claiming a seat. We reply within five business days. You can move into a marketplace seat when you’re ready to ship.
Is this a job? Am I an employee?
You apply like it’s a job — that’s the energy. The Sprint itself is mentored work experience in a squad, not a wage employment contract by default. Longer Venture / ownership paths have separate written terms. We won’t pretend you’re on payroll if you’re not.
What’s the Sprint vs the year-long path?
Sprint is the front door: a seat, a squad, real lifecycle work, two ships, a signal pack, and an engagement graph — then you convert or exit well. The year-long path is the long game after you’ve proven you can show up: workplace access, sustained delivery, and an optional Venture with ownership and pay-later terms when that agreement applies.
What will I actually do?
You do track work — Marketing, Engineering, Business Analyst, Product Owner, UX, Sales, or Data — on a repeatable lifecycle: scope, map, plan, build, review, ship. Tools appear when the work needs them. You leave with artifacts and a show-up record, not a certificate alone.
Do I learn to use AI?
Yes — because the market now expects it. Recruiters are drowning in generic AI applications; what employers want is someone who can harness AI for their specific role and industry — draft with it, review it, ship work they still own. On every pathway you practice that in Instrument and Build: AI assists, peers review to a rubric, you keep the artifact. See pathways for role-specific examples.
What’s the engagement graph?
A verified timeline recruiters can open: active, partial, paused for a rough stretch, or absent. It’s the same view you see. Hardship, rent pressure, or a food crisis isn’t scored as flaking — that’s a care path. Ghosting the work is visible and triggers a check-in, not a public roast. We’d rather show integrity than vanity streaks. The artifact is on trial — not the person.
Money & equity
What does it cost?
Applying and the Sprint aren’t sold as a day-one finance product. Recommended tools are yours to clear when work needs them (proof of access). The year / Venture path may use a separate buy-now-pay-later or income-share agreement — capped, threshold-based, dull and written. You review numbers before you convert, not before you’re allowed to apply. Worth knowing: take independent advice before signing any credit/partnership agreement. Cooling-off and deferment rules are in that document.
When and how do I actually pay?
You pay nothing until your income passes the agreed threshold. Below it, payments are deferred — paused, with no interest building up. Once you're earning above the threshold, contributions begin as a share of income, up to the fixed cap and never beyond it. The mechanics are spelled out in your agreement.
How does the equity work?
As a founding member you take a stake in the venture, vesting over time. You're not doing free work for someone else — you're building something you partly own. The vesting schedule and full terms are set out in your agreement, so you know exactly what you hold and when.
What happens if I leave early?
You're free to leave — these are voluntary ventures. What you keep, how vesting is treated, and any remaining obligations are all defined in your agreement. We'd genuinely rather you read that section carefully (and take independent advice) before signing than gloss over it here, because the specifics matter.
Eligibility
Is the program online?
Yes — 100% online. Squads, buddy check-ins, reviews, and shipping all run remotely. You need a reliable internet connection and the tools your track clears — not a city campus seat.
Who can apply?
Graduates, post-graduates, and career switchers who can commit Sprint hours and are eligible to work or train in Australia. Pathways include Marketing, Engineering, Business Analyst, Product Owner, UX, Sales, and Data. The program itself is 100% online.
Can I apply if I'm on a student or work visa?
Possibly — it depends on your visa’s work and study conditions, which differ a lot by type. Start an application and we’ll walk through eligibility with you early.
Do I need to be an experienced developer already?
No — the whole point is to take you from "not enough experience" to genuinely hireable. You'll need some foundation to contribute to a real build, and the application helps us understand where you're at and which squad fits. We'd rather place you well than take everyone.
After the program
Do you guarantee me a job at the end?
No — and anyone who promises that is selling you something. What we give you is the thing most grads are missing: genuine, recent, shippable experience and people who can vouch for your work. That's what moves you up the pile in a real hiring process. The applying, interviewing and landing is still yours to do — and our mentors help you do it.
What do I walk away with?
At minimum after the Sprint: two shipped artifacts, squad people who can vouch, a signal pack, and an engagement graph. On the year path you get deeper operating proof, workplace access activity, and — if you take Venture — ownership terms per agreement. No honest program guarantees a job.
